  My Story

In 1989 I severely injured myself in the dojang (Korean dojo) while doing kick drills.  After emergency room surgery, two subsequent surgeries that year and physical therapy all day long, I was still unable to walk.  The doctors simply decided that since they had done their job, I should be fine and if I was not, it was obviously may fault.  By this time I was broke and my insurance had run out, then been cancelled, as I had no money to pay the high premiums, having lost my job.  I sought alternative methods to try to walk again.  Doing what odd jobs I could to support myself, I scraped together a little money and tried massage therapy.  I was lucky. I had found a good shiatsu therapist and in my first session she restored almost all of the range of motion is my leg, with remarkable results in just the first session.

This was something which the doctors and physical therapists had not been able to do, even with drugs, painful treatments and exercises for over a year.

I made getting my massages my financial and dutiful priority -  it was still cheaper than the expensive insurance premiums that I could not afford.  I also learned about nutrition, herbs and exercises that helped me.  I had been getting weaker and weaker and more stressed from the ordeal, and from the toxins in my system, as well as food sensitivities and they were all making me very ill.  By this time my asthma was also out of control.

With qualified massage professionals who helped me with massage, rehabilitation exercises, herbs and nutrition, I slowly healed.  My strength began to return and I regained some optimism.  The severe soft tissue damage, was even more problematic due to compensation injuries.   After three years on crutches I finally began to walk, although with a painful limp, and I suffered chronic back pain that had been present since the injury.  I was getting better.  The doctors and P.T s had just given up and had said "that's all – we’ve done our job."  I was also referred to a great chiropractor, Eric Widen, who over time, with good and gentle care, got the limp out of my gait and the pain out of my back.  During my recovery I had started studying massage and apprenticing with one of my great therapists.  I initially just wanted to learn, to know about myself and to better help myself and take care of myself.  I became fascinated with the art and science of massage, energy systems and natural healing, as well as therapeutic stretching and exercise.  Wellness through bringing the body back into balance with diet, herbs and aromatherapy was right up there on my study list as well.  I saw that I could help others who were in pain, just like I had been helped, and I could help all people with wellness and taking care of their bodies.

This became the center of my life, and I maintain an active workout schedule and I maintain my health through wellness practices including diet, exercise, yoga, chiropractic, massage and bodywork.

I have now been practicing massage for over 16 years.  I encourage anyone who is remotely interested to take the time to learn something about this healing modality and benefit from quality treatments.
