Massage FAQ What is therapeutic massage? Therapeutic massage involves physical manipulation of the body and use of a variety of pressure and stroking techniques and topical applications on the skin to improve general health, posture, relieve pain, restriction, free up movement, increase circulation and stimulate the immune system. A massage is most commonly performed with the closes off and touching the surface of the skin. Massage therapists maintains the modesty of the client by keeping them covered and never works in intimate areas of the body. What is bodywork? Bodywork involves physical manipulation of the body to improve general health or posture, or to treat injuries. It involves touching as in grasping, pushing and pulling and other movements. It does not involve massaging the skin, use of oils or removal of clothing. Is a license required to do massage? That depends on the legislation in the State. In the State of Georgia in the United States, a healthcare license for massage therapy is required, as well as training, certification and insurance. Who is licensed to provide therapeutic massage or bodywork? A certified massage therapist is licensed to provide therapeutic massage and bodywork. A chiropractor and other professionals may practice specific forms of bodywork, and if they are not a licensed massage therapist, they may provide this under their professional license. Examples are doctors such as chiropractors and osteopaths. There are some bodywork modalities that do not require a license, although certification and training is required. Again, this depends upon the State and the County. In general, you will find professional providers are licensed as a therapist or doctor. Is massage covered by my insurance? Sometimes. That depends on if your insurance policy provides coverage for neuromuscular therapy. If it does a written prescription and referral to an authorized provider is required in the State of Georgia. Rules vary from State to State. You should call your insurance company. Also remember that you still owe your therapist at the time of service. Collect ion from the insurance company is up to you. Why do therapists always tell you to drink lots of water after a massage? Because massage increases circulation and stimulates organs to cleanse. This increases the volume of blood filtering through the liver and kidneys. This means you are cleaning more and need more fluid to flush out the toxins. Sometimes I feel a little sore after a massage. Is this normal and is it healthy? This is quite normal depending upon the type of massage that you get and your condition and health. Working the tissues lose, breaking up scar tissue and adhesions, and causing the tissues and body to cleanse will make you feel better overall, but immediately there can be some tenderness. This depends on how deep your therapist goes, so just keep giving the therapist feedback during the massage. How often should I get a massage? Massage is great for the health in many ways and there are many types of massage, so you could get many. Most people who are generally healthy and want to relax and maintain a healthy pain-free suppleness and flexibility need at least one per month. Less than this, you are not maintaining anything. Once a week is ideal for active people, if one can afford it and fit it into the schedule. Many people choose to come once a week during times of pain and injury, but once every two weeks or once a month for maintenance. The more active you are, the more you can do. What kind of massage should I get? There are many styles of massage and many modalities. The most common is Swedish, and this is best for relaxation and also for soothing mildly fatigued muscles. This is also best for those who have never had a therapeutic massage before or those who have not been worked on in a very long time. Deep tissue with some neuromuscular and trigger point or sports massage is favored by athletes and very active individuals. Friction massage or circulation massage is god for those trying to lose weight, for cellulite reduction and diabetics who need to improve circulation. I do not feel comfortable disrobing. I would like to get massage for pain relief though. Is there any way to get a massage without disrobing? Yes. You will not be able to receive the typical Swedish, neuromuscular or deep tissue massage or circulation massage, but you can get significant results with shiatsu and other bodywork techniques that involve use of acupressure points, compressions, stretching and muscle balancing without disrobing. Why do therapists use music, scent and soft light – even candles? It seems romantic. They do this not for any reason other than to address the mind-body connection for therapeutic purposes. It is essential to relax the mind and the whole person to get the muscles to relax. The therapeutic techniques and pain relief is based on relaxing, unwinding and elongating the tissues. If your mind is running through a laundry list of things and does not settle down, neither will your muscles. Massage Styles: What styles do we do? What techniques do we employ?
