About Massage and Bodywork

In the United States, Massage Therapists, or massologists, unlike masseuses or masseurs, are educated, trained healthcare professionals.  After the basic education in anatomy, physiology, pathology and soft-tissue dysfunction, contraindications, and basic massage techniques, therapists  continue education and training in more specialized areas of interest to them. There are many avenues of study to pursue and there are many hands-on techniques as well that all require extra training.

Some examples of areas of study include rehabilitation, detoxification, sports therapy, oriental bodywork, connective tissue and alignment, energy systems, relaxation, visceral systems and the cranial-sacral system.

Some examples of massage techniques are basic Swedish, neuromuscular, deep tissue, trigger-point, myofacial release, lymphatic drainage, sports massage, shiatsu, acupressure, and reflexology.

Some examples of bodywork are zero balancing, cranial-sacral, Alexander, polarity therapy.

Areas of supplemental training:  wellness, exercise, yoga, stretching, herbology, aromatherapy.
